How to Set Up a School Infirmary in India
Most schools have a sick room. Few have a medical room that would pass an inspection or handle a real emergency. Use this checklist to close the gap.
By Educure School Health ·

Space and layout
A dedicated, ventilated room away from classroom noise, minimum two beds with washable mattresses and curtains, a screened examination corner, a hand-wash basin with soap, a separate rest area or clear protocol for girls, good lighting, and a wall chart of emergency numbers including the nearest hospital, ambulance and the school's doctor on call.
Equipment
Digital BP apparatus with paediatric and adult cuffs, digital thermometers, a pulse oximeter, a glucometer with strips, a nebuliser with masks, a weighing scale and stadiometer, an oxygen cylinder with regulator and mask, a spine board and cervical collar, splints and slings, ice packs and a small fridge, a first-aid kit for each floor and each sports ground, and, where the budget allows, an automated external defibrillator with a trained user.
Medicines
A locked cabinet with a written formulary approved by the school doctor: paracetamol in age-appropriate strengths, oral rehydration salts, an antihistamine, an antiseptic solution and cream, a topical burn dressing, an antacid, a bronchodilator inhaler with spacer, and emergency medication such as an adrenaline auto-injector for students with known severe allergy, held with parental consent and the child's own prescription. No antibiotics without a doctor's order. An expiry register checked monthly.
Staffing
A qualified nurse, GNM, ANM or B.Sc Nursing, on campus during school hours with a valid registration, a doctor on call with a signed agreement, and a substitute arrangement for leave. Training refreshed every year in basic life support, choking, anaphylaxis, seizure and head injury.
Protocols and records
Written standard operating procedures for fever, head injury, fracture, anaphylaxis, asthma, seizure, heat exhaustion, bleeding and mental health crisis, displayed and rehearsed twice a year. A digital visit log for every student who walks in: complaint, examination, action, medicine given, parent informed, follow-up due. A monthly summary to the principal.
