The onsite school infirmary: why a school clinic is now core infrastructure in India
A sick room with a cupboard of bandages is not a clinic. Here is why an onsite infirmary with a trained nurse is becoming standard for Indian schools, what it must contain, and how Educure staffs one for INR 19,999 a month.

Every school already runs a clinic — most just run it badly
A school with 800 children will handle something between five and twenty health events a day: falls in the playground, fever, asthma attacks, allergic reactions, period pain, fainting in assembly, sports injuries, and the occasional genuine emergency. The question is never whether the school provides care. It is whether that care is delivered by a qualified nurse with a protocol, or by whoever happens to be in the staff room.
Safety norms across Indian states and board affiliation requirements expect a functional sick room, first-aid arrangements, trained personnel and a link to a nearby hospital. Parents now expect more than that — they expect to be told, the same hour, what happened to their child and what was done about it.
What an onsite infirmary must actually contain
Space and beds: a clean, ventilated room separate from classrooms, with at least two beds, a screened examination area, hand-wash facility and separate space for girls.
Staff: a qualified nurse (GNM/ANM/B.Sc Nursing) on campus during school hours, backed by a doctor on call and a defined escalation path to a partner hospital with an ambulance arrangement.
Equipment: BP apparatus, digital thermometers, pulse oximeter, nebuliser, glucometer, weighing scale and stadiometer, oxygen cylinder, spine board, splints, ice packs, an AED where feasible, and a locked medicine cabinet with expiry tracking.
Medicines: a school-appropriate formulary of antipyretics, oral rehydration salts, antihistamines, antiseptics, topical preparations, bronchodilator inhalers with spacers, and emergency medication for known students — kept strictly to doctor-approved dosing by age and weight.
Protocol: written standard operating procedures for fever, head injury, fracture, anaphylaxis, asthma, seizure, heat exhaustion, bleeding and mental-health crisis — printed, displayed and rehearsed.
Records are the part everyone skips
The clinic register is where a school learns about itself. Fifteen headaches a month from one class may be a vision problem, not a habit. Repeat stomach complaints from one child may be anxiety. None of that is visible in a handwritten notebook.
A digital visit record converts each clinic visit into a dated entry on the child's health file: complaint, examination, diagnosis impression, medicine given, advice, whether the parent was informed, and whether a specialist referral or follow-up is due.
The Educure school clinic service
We place a trained school nurse on campus, with doctor supervision, protocols, an equipped infirmary setup and a digital clinic module — at INR 19,999 per month, with optional add-ons.
Every visit is recorded in our clinic software and converts into a proper prescription format: doctor details, medicines from a curated school formulary, investigations where required, specialist referral recommendation, and a follow-up date. Parents can be sent the visit summary on WhatsApp the same day.
Where a specialist opinion is needed, the nurse can book a teleconsultation with a paediatrician, ophthalmologist, dentist, dermatologist or psychologist over a scheduled video call, with the prescription issued digitally — so a child is not sent home for a problem that ten minutes of expert time could settle.
What it changes for the school
Fewer children sent home unnecessarily, so attendance improves. Faster, documented emergency response, which is exactly what matters if an incident is ever reviewed. Confident parent communication. And a year-end health report that tells the management which problems recur and where to intervene.
Schools running our onsite clinic typically see the majority of daily complaints closed on campus, with only genuine cases escalated to hospital.
