Ayushman Bharat School Health Programme: What Schools Need to Know
The government's school health programme sets a clear template: screening, weekly health education, trained teacher ambassadors and referral. Private schools can adopt all four.

What the programme is
The School Health and Wellness Programme is the school component of Ayushman Bharat, run jointly by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and the Ministry of Education. It was launched in 2020 to reach students in government and government-aided schools with age-appropriate health education, health screening and referral, and it is delivered through the Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram teams for screening and through trained teachers for education. Its structure is worth copying even for schools it does not formally cover.
The four pillars
The first pillar is health promotion through curriculum: eleven themes, from growing up healthy and emotional wellbeing to nutrition, substance misuse, injuries, gender equality, reproductive health, HIV, healthy lifestyles, safe internet use and violence prevention, taught for one hour a week. The second pillar is the Health and Wellness Ambassador: two teachers per school, one male and one female, trained to deliver the sessions and to be the first point of contact for a student in distress. The third is screening: annual health screening for every child under RBSK's 4Ds, which are defects at birth, deficiencies, diseases and developmental delays. The fourth is referral and follow-up through district early intervention centres.
What private and CBSE schools should take from it
CBSE's own affiliation bye-laws already require annual medical check-ups and health records, and CBSE's 2026 counsellor mandate mirrors the ambassador concept with trained professionals. The gap in most private schools is not the checkup, which they usually buy, but the weekly health education hour and the referral loop. Adopting the eleven-theme curriculum as a one-period-a-week wellness class costs almost nothing and gives the school a documented health education programme that inspectors and parents can see.
Mapping Educure's programme to the framework
Our annual health checkup maps to the screening pillar and reports can be exported in RBSK format for schools that want to align with district systems. Our counsellor service and the free psychometric self-check cover the emotional wellbeing theme and the ambassador role. The complimentary awareness sessions included with every service cover nutrition, oral health, vaccination and hygiene. And the digital health record closes the referral loop by tracking every flagged child to an outcome, which is the part the government programme itself finds hardest to do.
A one-page adoption plan for your school
Nominate two health and wellness teachers. Fix one period a week for health education using the eleven themes. Schedule the annual screening in the first term. Create a referral register, digital if possible, and review closure every term. Report the four numbers to your management each year: children screened, children flagged, referrals closed and sessions delivered.
