Why every school child needs an annual health checkup

Growth, vision and dental problems are silent in the classroom. An annual screening catches them while they are still easy and cheap to correct.

Most childhood health problems are invisible in class

A child who cannot read the board, has an untreated cavity or is quietly falling below the healthy weight range rarely complains. Teachers see the symptom — poor attention, absenteeism, low participation — long before anyone sees the cause.

An annual screening turns that guesswork into data. Measuring height, weight, BMI, vision, dental status, ENT, skin and posture for every child once a year gives the school a baseline it can compare against next year.

What a complete checkup should include

Growth measurement with year-on-year tracking, vitals, vision screening with referral advice, dental charting by a dental surgeon, and a general systemic examination. Anything less leaves the most common childhood conditions undetected.

The screening is only half the job. Each parent must receive an individual, readable report with clear next steps, and the school must receive an aggregate view showing how many children need referral and for what.

Acting on the findings

Flagged students should have a named follow-up owner in school. Vision referrals in particular convert into classroom performance within weeks once spectacles are prescribed.

Schools that repeat the screening annually can show measurable improvement in anaemia, dental caries and BMI distribution across three academic years.
